As a parent, we all want bedtime to be as smooth as possible (and let's face it, sometimes it just doesn't go to plan!) However, Storytime is the best way I have found to settle my two children and relax them after a busy day of fun, sports, and school.
As an author, I understand that bedtime stories also inspire the best in children; spark their imagination; set them up for a good night's sleep, and also offer a positive outlook for the following day.
When I set out to write a new story, I ask myself who the characters will be and what journey will this story take? Generally, my stories are inspired by an event or a phrase that sparks an idea. For example, Franco and The Green Light Fairy was based on a conversation I had with my children in the car whilst stuck at red traffic lights. The concept of believing in The Green Light Fairy and that she will change the lights for us then effortlessly flowed onto paper in a matter of hours thereafter. Anything is possible if you believe!
I have stories of aliens who are tired of their dreary, mundane lives and dream of adventure to make a better life for themselves; though, with a little guidance, they don't need to look as far as they once thought. A rhyming story of two mice who are best friends and learn to not take each other for granted. Stories of encouragement, and stories of wishful thinking.
I carry a notebook with me everywhere to draft ideas that come to me or sketch out a rough storyboard. It doesn't matter how small the thought is, there is a story in everything we do. For me, the key is to create a positive underlying message, that inspires and influences.
Good luck with your writing and message me if you have any questions. I'd love to hear what you are writing about next.
